There are many brands of matting powder on the market, and each type of matting powder has a specific application field
and effect. In practical applications, various matting agents have strong selectivity for polyester resins. This selectivity refers
to the use of the same Matting Agent with different types of polyester to obtain different matting effects and performances.
Matting powder
Depending on the purpose of the matting powder, semi-gloss or matte powder coatings are sometimes required. In order to
reduce the gloss of the coating film, commonly used matting agents include ultrafine silica, talcum powder, aluminum stearate,
calcium stearate, low molecular thermoplastic resin, etc. To obtain the matting effect, the following methods can be used:
Powder coatings with different curing speeds are mixed by dry mixing, and the gloss of the resulting coating film is significantly
reduced, which plays a matting role. Because the powder coating with high reaction activity cures quickly, the leveling and reaction
of the slower curing resin in the continuous phase are hindered, and the cured coating film loses its gloss. Although this method is
effective, it increases the manufacturing process and cost.
Matting powder efficiency and coating surface state. The choice of matting agent is determined by the thickness of the dry film of
the coating. The particle size and the coating thickness must be well matched to achieve a satisfactory balance between matting
efficiency and surface smoothness. Among matting agent products with the same pore volume, the matting agent with a larger
particle size generally has a higher matting efficiency, but it will also cause the coating surface to be rougher. A matting agent
variety that can match the required coating roughness should be selected according to the fineness value of the matting agent.
In addition, the refractive index of the matting agent should be as close as possible to the refractive index of the fluororesin (1.4-1.6),
so that the matting fluorocarbon varnish prepared in this way is transparent and has no white fog, and the color of the fluorocarbon
color paint will not be affected. The wear resistance and scratch resistance of the fluorocarbon coating surface should also be
considered. The particle size and distribution of the matting powder have a great influence on the wear resistance and scratch
resistance of the coating surface. Special attention should be paid to not allowing large particles larger than 25μm.
Distinguishing the quality of matting powder from the good and bad
There are two key points to identify the quality of matting powder. First, look at the appearance. High-quality profiles have uniform
dimensions, reasonable inner cavity structure, soft color, smooth protective film, no bubbles, and the wall thickness is generally 2 mm.
Second, look at the anti-counterfeiting code. The side of the genuine plastic steel profile is printed with an anti-counterfeiting code
consisting of 20 Arabic numerals in dotted form. The numbers are clear and easy to identify, without duplication, and not easy to erase.
The numbers of inferior matte powder spray codes are blurred, easy to erase, and the numbers are often repeated.
