What are the functions of Silica Matting Agent in coil coating?

The commonly used matting agents are divided into two categories: organic and inorganic. Inorganic matting agents are mainly silica
matting agents, whose chemical composition is ultrafine sio2, which can be divided into two types: surface treated with organic matter
and untreated. Now we mainly discuss the application of silica Matting Agent in coatings. Pigments or fillers are added to the coating,
evenly distributed in the coating film and generate a type of micro-rough surface. Light calcium carbonate or talcum powder is used in
the production of matte coatings. The amount is large, often exceeding the critical pigment volume concentration of the coating, which
makes the physical properties of the coating film worse, such as stratification and hard precipitation. The use of matting powder can
avoid the phenomenon that the larger the surface particles, the greater the degree of micro-roughness, and the lower the gloss.
1. Matting mechanism of silica matting agent: The varnish coating without matting agent is in a mirror film leveling state. When the light
reaches the surface of the mirror film, part of the incident light is absorbed and part is reflected. The reflected part makes the film glossy.
The paint film containing silica matting agent, the silica particles evenly distributed in the paint film form a kind of micro-rough surface.
From the scanning electron microscope photo of the coating cross section, it can be clearly seen that the matting agent particles are evenly
distributed in the coating film. When the incident light reaches the uneven surface of the paint film, diffuse reflection is generated, that is,
scattering is generated to produce low-gloss matte and matte appearance. The use of silica matting agent with high porosity, optimal particle
size distribution and suitable surface treatment can achieve the best matting effect.
2. Silica matting powder: Natural SIO2 is ground to obtain quartz sand (powder). It has a high impurity content and its main component is SIO2.
It cannot be called silica and has no matting properties. It can only be used as a filler in coatings and has no matting effect. The silica matting
agent used in coatings mainly generates SIO2, which is divided into two types: gas phase silica and Precipitated Silica. Its microstructure is
amorphous or glassy.
The precipitation method of producing silicon dioxide uses quartz sand as the main raw material, which is reacted with sodium hydroxide or
sodium carbonate in a kiln at high temperature and then subjected to post-processing. Gas-phase silicon dioxide is produced by hydrolyzing
silicon tetrachloride vapor in a hydrogen-oxygen flame. Compared with natural SiO2, SiO2 has higher purity, greater inertness, and is more
resistant to ultraviolet light. The refractive index of amorphous SiO2 is 1.46, which is close to the refractive index of many epoxy resins in the
coatings industry. Therefore, amorphous silicon dioxide can be used as a matting powder in coatings and has excellent optical properties.
