Silica is mainly used in coatings for buildings, automobiles, railway vehicles and ships, and is also used as a coloring pigment
in gray and other colors of coatings. Silica has high blackness and tinting power and stable price, so it is an indispensable
black pigment in the coating industry. Now most coatings use silica as a coating processing product.
1) Important indicator of silica for coatings: silica blackness
Blackness is the main indicator of silica for coatings. When used for coloring black coatings, such as black car topcoat, the higher
the blackness of the silica used, the better. When silica is used for coloring, too much melanin and too little addition can easily cause
color differences in different batches of coating products, so silica with lower blackness is required.
2) Important indicator of silica for coatings: silica tinting power
Tinting power (tinting strength) is the coloring ability of silica when white or color pigments and silica are mixed. That is, the degree to
which silica improves the light absorption of the mixture. This characteristic depends on the ratio of silica to pigment and the properties
of silica itself. When the ratio is constant, the coloring ability of a certain silica is its coloring strength, which is called coloring power in
the coating industry.
When the silica particle size is small, the structure is low, and the coloring power is high. However, when the particle size is less than 20nm,
the coloring ability no longer increases, or even decreases.
3) The third important indicator of silica for coatings
The light reflection of "silica particles" weakens as the particle size decreases, which also affects the hue. Using fine-particle silica to color
the surface black produces a light blue phase, which can further enhance the high chromaticity visual impression. Coloring with coarse-particle
silica will produce a brown hue.
In addition to particle size, the structure of silica also affects the hue. Silica with a higher structure and silica with coarser particles will have similar
effects.
4) Important indicators of silica for coatings: silica gloss
When the silica particle size decreases or the structure increases, the silica oil absorption increases, which will increase the viscosity of the coating.
At the same silica concentration, the free paint (film-forming substance) on the coating surface decreases, so the gloss decreases. When the surface
oxygen-containing groups or volatiles increase, the wettability of silica in the binder increases, the viscosity decreases, the free paint on the coating
surface increases, and the gloss will increase.
5) Important indicators of silica for coatings: silica dispersibility and dispersion stability
The aggregate size of silica for coatings is generally between 20 and hundreds of nanometers, which is not easy to disperse in the paint. The dispersion
state of silica in the paint has a great influence on the performance of the coating. In addition, when silica is used in coatings, especially when mixed with
other pigments such as titanium dioxide, due to the differences in relative density, aggregate diameter, shape and surface chemistry, silica is prone to
flocculation, which affects the dispersion stability of the coating.
