Elastomeric coatings are protective barriers applied to interior and exterior walls, such as wall paints. Elastomeric coatings
can be water-based paints and coatings or acrylic latex paints. They are applied as thick coatings on concrete structures.
Elastomeric coatings or acrylic resin coatings belong to the category of latex paints because they are milky white when wet
and become elastic, retractable and clear in appearance after drying.
Exterior wall paints are used to paint the exterior facades of buildings, so the most important indicator is resistance to ultraviolet
radiation, which requires long-term exposure without discoloration. Exterior wall paints are also required to have water resistance
and self-cleaning properties. The paint film should be hard and flat, and dirt can be washed off with a single wash.
In response to these requirements for exterior wall paints, nano-silicon dioxide was added to the exterior wall paints. It was found that
nano-colloidal SiO2 had a certain suspension effect on the pigments and fillers in the paint, which can improve the storage stability of
the paint, improve the thixotropic properties of the paint, and effectively control splashing, sagging and other phenomena during construction.
5% nano-SiO2 addition can significantly improve the surface finish of the coating, and improve the water resistance, alkali resistance and
washability of the coating. Nano-silica in different combinations and ratios was added to pure acrylic latex exterior wall paint after
pretreatment for modification. The experimental results show that the added nano-silica can significantly improve the thixotropic properties
and stability of the paint as well as the adhesion, gloss, water resistance, alkali resistance, scrub resistance and stain resistance of the coating.
